Reaching net zero by 2050 will have to come with the deployment of technologies that are not commercialized yet. Nuclear energy, as a low carbon energy, has an important role to play alongside with renewables. The interest of states and the development of Small modular reactors (SMRs) technologies are blooming worldwide in the last years. This seminar will explain why SMRs represent a new paradigm in the history of nuclear energy and will then put into perspective the deployment schedule of light water SMRs compared to the advanced modular reactors (AMRs) and microreactors. Finally, it provides an overview of the main SMR vendors, and briefly presents the fundamentals and the positioning of NUWARD™, the French SMR project.
