On October 31, 2023, the Data for Good association and the éclaircies collective launched CarbonBombs.org, the first platform to shed light on the involvement of companies and banks in the "carbon bombs", the 425 largest fossil fuel extraction projects in the world. Future emissions from these projects represent twice the maximum volume of CO2 that can be emitted without compromising a global warming trajectory of 1.5°C. A few weeks before COP 28, this platform underlines the importance of a rapid exit from fossil fuels. Thanks to a citizen's analysis of public data, CarbonBombs.org displays on an open-source platform the 425 fossil energy extraction projects (oil, gas and/or coal) whose future combustion could generate more than 1 billion tonnes of CO₂ (1 Gt of CO₂). What is a carbon bomb? What is the role of each player? What can be done about it?
